the bones in the inner ear are designed to move in such a way that we maintain our equilibrium. when the message the eyes send to the brain when looking at movement from within the car does not match the message the ears are sending to the brain the result is what's commonly referred to as motion sickness.

Because they try to read while the car is in motion. The right to left motion of the eyes does not go well with the up and down, front to back movement of the car. The inner ear gets all confused and sends puking signals to the stomach.
