i need to goto new york soon and am worried about driving my truck there. ive never been there but i fear i would not be able to get around easily. i like space and hate being close to another car and my reflexes are kinda bad. i like to drive a little distant from other drivers. i mainly fear switchinig lanes in the traffic and stoppinig quickly. do you think i should drive in NY? thanks

I went into NYC to visit B&H Camera. Found the store. No parking near. Nearest lot was five blocks away and they wanted $5 for the first 15 minutes. So I went back to the store and parked on the sidewalk next to the fire hydrant -- just like the locals.

That was in 1968. Parking can only be worse now. Take public transportation. http://maps.goggle.com has a public transportation option.

You can head north to I-90 and just follow that. There are sevveral ways to get to the mass pike from ri. Or when you are in CT take rt 9 to 91 to I-90. I-90 goes from boston to Seattle - and if I'm not mistaken - it goes right through I'll. Other than that - the 287 to tappanzee option would work. Then again - if you are traveling late at night traffic won't be an issue most of the time. Don't go during the morning or evening rush should you have to go through nyc.

Taxi drivers in NYC are the most professional drivers in the world. They log more wreck free miles than any other drivers. Non NYC drivers will not fit in there very well by allowing room if front of your bumper will be a sign that a taxi cab needs to squeeze in there. Those cab drivers not only know where there fenders are but also know how thick the paint is on your fender. Park out side of town ride the subway in. If you really need to drive be sure of parking and where you are going.

I'm from Long Island and I never thought I could drive in the city because like you I leave plenty of room from the car ahead of me and i dont like stop suddenly and all around a cautious driver. But one day I had to take my friend in the city and drove around from 1pm - 6pm right thru lunch and rush hour traffic. It wasn't too bad once you got used to it.

But let me tell you, dont leave too much space in front of your or taxis and jaywalkers will just run in the middle of the street and you have to slam on the brakes to avoid running them over.

Park in the suburbs, like Newark and take the train into NYC.

I have driven into Manhattan to drop people off and that was fine. However, parking is another issue, Parking in NYC fir 2-3 hours is more expensive that taking the train in from Newark.

Why would you want to? NYC has an excellent subway system, and there are commuter railroads to get into the city. Don't even bother with driving.
